The specialization you get assigned on Warcraft Logs is in general determined by which talent tree you have majority of your talent points in. The talent point distribution is the only information given in the combat log, so we get no information about which specific talents are taken.
The exception to this rule is Tank specializations, and this article will go through the various requirements to get a tank spec.

Tank Requirements
We had a lot of success with damage taken requirements in TBC, and these are continuing in WotLK.

Please note that Warriors require 70% Defensive Stance uptime for main tank specs.
Main Tanks
MT stands for Main Tank, and the below specializations qualify for that:
Blood DK
Lichborne DK
Guardian Druid
Protection Paladin
Protection Warrior
Champion Warrior
Off Tanks
OT stands for Off Tank, and the below specializations for that:
Runeblade DK (With majority talent points
Frost or
Unholy)
Warden Druid
Gladiator Warrior (With majority talent points
Fury or
Arms)
Death Knight
We are splitting up Blood and Frost/Unholy tanks. Blood is getting an additional Off Tank/DPS spec in Runeblade, and Frost/Unholy Main Tanks will get Lichborne .
Blood
Blood is the Main Tank spec for DKs with majority talent points in the Blood talent tree and it requires you to complete the main tank damage taken requirements.
Runeblade
Runeblade is the Off Tank spec for DKs with a majority talent points in the Frost or
Unholy talent trees and also meet the off tank damage taken requirements.
It is also the spec for DKs with majority talent points in the Blood talent tree that fail the damage taken requirements.
Lichborne
Lichborne is the Main Tank spec for DKs with majority talent points in the Frost or
Unholy talent trees and it requires you to complete the main tank damage taken requirements.
Druid
Druids no longer require any form % uptime.
Guardian
Guardian is the Main Tank spec for Druids. It requires majority talent points in the Feral talent tree and it requires you to complete the main tank damage taken requirements.
Warden
Warden is the Off Tank role for Druids. It requires majority talent points in the Feral talent tree and it requires you to complete the Off Tank damage taken requirements.
Feral
Feral is the DPS role specialization for druids with a majority talent points in the Feral talent tree. If you fail the damage taken requirements with a majority talent points in the Feral tree, you will be assigned Feral.
Paladin
Paladins have a Main Tank spec in Protection, and a fallback spec for those that do not fulfill the requirements in Justicar.
Protection
Protection is the Main Tank specialization for Paladins. It requires majority talent points in the Protection tree and it requires you to complete the main tank damage taken requirements.
Justicar
Justicar is the fallback specialization created for Protection Paladins that don't complete the damage taken requirements. It requires majority talent points in the Protection tree and failed damage taken requirements.
Warrior
Warriors have 3 'tank category' specs. Protection and Champion are Main Tank specializations, depending on where you have majority talent points. Gladiator is the fallback spec for Protection Warriors that do not fulfill the tank requirements, and also the Off Tank spec for Arms/Fury.
Warriors also require 70% Defensive Stance uptime for Main Tank roles.
Protection
Protection is one of the Main Tank specializations for Warriors. It requires majority talent points in the
Protection talent tree and requires you to complete the damage taken requirements.
Gladiator
Gladiator is the non-tank role for Protection Warriors. It requires majority talent points in the Protection tree, and failed damage taken requirements.
It is also the Off Tank spec for Arms/Fury. You need to have majority talent points in Arms or Fury and fulfill the Off Tank damage taken requirements.
Champion
Champion is the Main Tank role for Arms/Fury Warriors. It requires majority talent points in either the Arms or the
Fury tree and to complete the damage taken requirements.

Main Tank - Needs 70% of boss melee swings.
Off Tank - Needs 70% of melee swings from Iron Constructs
Razorscale
Main Tank - Needs 40% of boss melee swings
Off Tank - Needs 40% of melee swings from Dark Rune Sentinels OR 15% of melee swings from Razorscale
XT
Main Tank - Needs 70% of boss melee swings.
Off Tank - Needs 40% of melee swings from XM-024 Pummelers
Assembly of Iron
Main Tank - You must tank Steelbreaker or Runemaster Molgeim (combined) for at least 80% of 2 phases
Off Tank - You must tank Steelbreaker or Runemaster Molgeim (combined) for at least 80% of 1 phase
Kologarn
Main Tank - Needs 55% of melee swings from Kologarn
Off Tank - Needs 15% of melee swings from Kologarn OR 40% of melee swings from Rubble
Auriaya
Main Tank - Needs 70% of boss melee swings
Off Tank - Needs 20% of melee swings from Sanctum Sentry OR 40% of melee swings from Feral Defender, with a minimum of 5 swings
Freya
Main Tank - Needs one of the below:
- 30% of melee swings from Freya) AND 20% of the total melee swings from Snaplashers + Storm Lashers + Ancient Water Spirits + Ancient Conservators
- 70% of melee swings from Freya
- 70% of the total melee swings from Snaplashers + Storm Lashers + Ancient Water Spirits + Ancient Conservators
Off Tank - Needs one of the below:
- 20% of total melee swings from Snaplashers, Storm Lashers, Ancient Water Spirits and Ancient Conservators
- 30% of melee swings from Freya
Thorim
Main Tank - Needs 40% of boss melee swings.
Off Tank - Needs 15% of melee swings from Thorim
Mimiron
Main Tank - Needs 70% of Leviathan MKII melee swings.
Off Tank - Not available.
Hodir
Main Tank - Needs 70% of boss melee swings.
